In recent years, bride and groom cake toppers have been described as cheesy, tacky, and out dated by modern cake designers, but you might also consider that they are traditional, and if done tastefully they can be a lot of fun.  After all, what makes a wedding cake different from just another fancy cake if it doesn’t have a wedding topper?
Here are five ways you can have a bride and groom topper on your wedding cake without being accused of being corny:

  1.  Look for a topper that reflects you as a couple.  If you’re both into riding, the bride and groom could be sitting on horses. If you love winter sports have your bride and groom slaloming down the cake on miniature skis.
  2. You don’t have to have the bride and groom in the classic arm in arm position on top of your cake. Work with your cake designer to come up with something unusual. Some couples have the bride trying to climb up onto the top tier, helped by the groom who is already on top. Others have the groom down on one knee at the base of the cake while the bride looks down from the top, a little like Romeo and Juliet during the balcony scene.
  3. Having a bride and groom topper made from clay to resemble you and your groom is a very fashionable option, and while it may be quite expensive it will make your cake truly unique and a real talking point. Try to let the designer have pictures of your wedding outfits; just make sure the groom doesn’t get a glimpse of your gown.
  4. Adding humour to your cake with a funny bride and groom topper can make it more original. The reluctant groom is always a winner, with the bride dragging him across the cake by one ankle. You could also have the groom standing alone by an altar reading a note from the bride that reads ‘still shopping’. If you have a funny cake topper, make sure it really reflects your personalities or the joke may be lost on some guests.
  5. Using a vintage cake topper, such as the one your parents or grandparents had on their cake, is a popular way to stick with tradition and honour your family at the same time.
If you are determined not to have a bride and groom cake topper, there are many fashionable alternatives. Here are some ideas to get you started:
  •  Flowers make a great feature on your wedding cake, whether they are fresh flowers to match those in your bouquet, or iced flowers tumbling down the side of your cake. Ribbons are also a simple yet effective way to decorate your cake and to tie it into your colour scheme.
  • Making antique jewellery, especially brooches, into a cake topper is currently in vogue, and it is a good way to include your ‘something old’ in your wedding.  Work with your cake designer and see how you can incorporate a family heirloom into your top layer.
  • Some couples design a wedding motif or monogram that features on their wedding stationery.  Recreating this motif in icing to use as a stylish cake topper should be simple for an experienced cake designer.
  • Traditional wedding symbols can be used as wedding toppers in place of the usual bride and groom. These include intertwined hearts, kissing doves, tilted champagne glasses, or a decorative horse shoe for good luck.
  • Bold patterned wedding cakes, and cup cake towers are both popular wedding cake trends of the moment, and these could look overdone with anything on the top.  If you don’t think your wedding cake needs a topper, there’s no real reason to have one.

When you are choosing the look for your wedding cake, the first decision will be the type of icing you will have. This will be influenced by the type of finish you would like as well as the style of your wedding and cake. Here are three common types of icing:

1. Royal icing is made from pure icing sugar and egg whites, and it sets very hard so is generally the best option is you want intricate piping and delicate shapes. Royal icing tends to be used in icing wedding cakes for very formal occasions, and it is quite heavy so should be used on a dense cake such as a fruit cake. You will need a layer of marzipan or jam between the cake and the icing.

2. Fondant icing tastes similar to royal icing, but liquid glucose is added to the icing sugar and egg whites meaning that it never sets really hard. It can be used to make simple shapes, but is usually too soft for elaborate piping. Fondant icing gives a completely smooth and even finish. Fondant icing can be used on lighter sponge cakes, but still requires a base layer between the cake and the icing.

3. Butter cream icing is a delicious alternative to royal or fondant icing, and it is egg free. Made from icing sugar and butter, butter cream gives a textured finish, and is ideal for icing wedding cakes for informal occasions where the cake will all be eaten on the day. Butter cream can be applied directly to the cake without a base layer, and is often used for cupcakes. It can be piped to give a swirling effect, but this will be very soft so care should be taken in transportation.

Choosing the perfect wedding cake is one of the most challenging aspects of your wedding, simply because not only does it have to look awesome, it has to taste just as great too. So here’s 3 tips for you brides-to-be on how to choose the perfect wedding cake that your guests will love.

1. Research
One enjoyable part about choosing a wedding cake is going through all the lovely cake pictures and choosing the type that you like. You can look through our gallery of wedding cake pictures so you are aware about the types of cakes available out there, in terms of design and taste. If you have a dream cake in mind, get pictures from the internet, think of color swatches cake decoration material before making your request for a custom cake. That way, your baker will have a better idea of what you want. Understanding some basic terms of wedding cakes. For example, there are two common edible cake decoration items, fondant and buttercream. Fondant is easy to mould into interesting shapes and neat designs can be created, but it does not taste very palpable. On the other hand, buttercream tastes awesome, but it cannot be as easily shaped as fondant. For a cake that looks stunning and tastes amazing, an experienced baker can place a thin layer of fondant over the buttercream frosting, so that the cake looks delectable and tastes just as great.
2. Save Some Cake For Yourselves!

On the wedding day, many couples do not get the opportunity to eat the cake that they painstakingly helped to create. Ask your family or caterer to save some for you, you deserve to eat the cake that you were involved in creating! Enjoy your little piece of heaven with your spouse as a night snack before heading to bed, it’ll be a sweet closure to all the months of wedding preparation!
3. Less is More

We understand it’s probably the first time you are getting a professional service for cake creation and design. However, be careful not to overdo the decorating. Fondant designs, flowers and ribbons are great additions to spruce up the cake, but be sure to leave some space to make it look not too cluttered. If you choose to opt for fresh flowers, select those which are more hardy, so that they look fresh throughout the evening. Some examples are calla lilies, dahlias and roses.

If you’re thinking of having a novelty wedding cake, think about what you want to be portrayed at the wedding. Did you and your future spouse meet in a particularly meaningful place? Perhaps you went on holiday together and he proposed. Or you both share a passion for a hobby that you want to celebrate at the wedding.

Contemporary ideas for wedding cakes are going in a uniquely designed and colourful direction. Ideas for wedding cakes can and do come from everywhere. It can be a favourite colour, animal, flower, or even a video game. It’s probable that someone out there has already designed a cake to cater to your favourite themes, so consider the following suggestions.
Daisy Cake

A cake design featuring a three-tiered fondant cake frosted in white and decorated with small sugar daisies, would be excellent for an outdoor spring wedding or an indoor wedding where the colour theme is pastel. The small yellow blooms attract attention at the reception and you are sure to be complimented generously on the lovely choice of cake.

Grapevine Cake

Are you and your future spouse wine lovers, or perhaps you adore the Mediterranean countryside? Consider a four-tiered cake frosted in buttercream, with each tier lined with golden beads. Each tier also holds grapevine leaves that have been lovingly made from golden chocolate, as well as bunches of caramel-covered grapes. The top tier is decorated with a large cluster of grapes and this Tuscan cake is completed with caramel tendrils.

China Cakes

Ever thought of ordering a wedding cake covered in its own china pattern? These wedding cakes have a English pottery design dating from the nineteenth century, featuring intricate scenes and border patterns. Each decorative detail is piped in chocolate across a fondant icing. Wedgwood-style cakes, featuring the baby blue colour used in Wedgwood china and a decorative motif of fern leaves are a beautiful choice, completed with white beading and royal icing piped along the edges.

Couture Cakes

Impress your guests by replicating an aspect of your wedding dress on your wedding cake. As wedding gowns move towards colour accents and colourful flowers and embroidery for decoration, they can be used as inspiration for the cake design too. Cakes lined in ribbon bands and topped with formed sugar ribbons are proving popular. You can pick a colour from your dress or those of your bridesmaids to use as a colour theme for the cake. Embroidery from the wedding dress can also be used as scrollwork on the cake to add an elegant accent.

White on White

White seems simple, but this traditional colour lends elegance even to casual weddings, and will not clash with anything or be too outstanding, so it is not to be underestimated. There are numerous variations on this colour to choose from, so you have many choices. When the size and shape of the cake have been decided, the white frosting can be beautified with appliqués, dogwood petals made of gum-paste, meringue flowers in varying shades of white, strips of shaved coconut or blown sugar bubbles, to stick to the monochromatic theme. White is an amazingly flexible cake decoration option.

Contemporary preferences for wedding cakes have changed from the ordinary tiered cake into confections of icing and cake with an emphasis on design. Similarly, requests for flavours are also changing. While the customary option used to be a white cake with matching buttercream icing, brides and grooms today are ordering their cakes in various flavours, with icing colours other than the usual white.
Wedding couples are now ordering multiple cakes to be served at the reception, instead of the usual large cake. This allows them to offer more options in terms of flavour to their guests. In addition, smaller cakes can be used as table centerpieces and can have different sizes, shapes and decoration as well as different flavours. Guests can then go around the room, sampling the different cake flavours. This way of serving cake is also an icebreaker to bring together the families and friends of the bride and groom, making for a merrier occasion.

While a vanilla cake is a traditional choice that remains popular today, there is a large selection of flavours to satisfy brides and grooms that want to stand out from the crowd. For smaller weddings, cheesecake is an increasingly popular choice. Other options include meringues, baked Alaska, chocolate cake, angel food cake, fruitcakes, pound cake and even cakes made of mousse, which is usually a cold dessert. Wedding couples seeking to offer something outstanding can check out the following list before going the traditional route with a white or chocolate cake.
Carrot Cake

Carrot cakes make an excellent choice for a fall wedding. The slight spiciness of the cake complements the colours of the season and the cake itself is moist. The cakes are often made with oil instead of butter, and can be baked a few days before the wedding without losing its freshness. Raisins in the cake can be replaced with pecans or walnuts, or omitted altogether. For decorations, a suggestion would be to use white icing and decorate with pecan nuts and floral arrangements with sunflowers and roses.
Pumpkin Cake

A pumpkin cake is another fantastic idea for a wedding held in fall or winter, approaching the holiday season. To fit the festive theme, decorate the cake with cranberry and greenery such as holly or mistletoe. An icing suggestion is cranberry buttercream to complement this somewhat rustic, homey cake.
Chocolate Raspberry

This is a chocolate cake containing a raspberry filling. The wedding guests will have a surprise when the cake is cut and the layer of raspberry is revealed inside the cake. This cake can have a chocolate buttercream frosting and can be decorated with curls of shaven chocolate and any floral arrangements.
White Cake with Lemon Curd, Blackberry Curd and Pressed Flours

When completed, this is a truly beautiful cake. The lemon and blackberry curds will beautify the slices with their yellow and purple colours. This cake should have a white icing with purple accents piped along the tier edges. Finish off the cake with pressed and crystallized flowers such as pansies.
